Discourse 5 ThumbnailMaster Teacher and close disciples gather in a secluded mountain setting to discuss the esoteric meaning of Jesus' teachings. They analyze these teachings in the light of insights from the ancient Vedas. Everything is provided by God, directly or indirectly. So when we are doing devotional service, we have a direct relationship with God and He can directly supply all our needs. That’s the special quality of devotional service. So now he finishes up with some warnings. First of all he says: “Do not judge, so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured unto you.”

So this doesn’t mean that we are to throw away all discrimination. Obviously we need to determine what’s right, what’s acceptable, what’s not acceptable. Jesus himself rejected the Pharisees; threw the money changers out of the temple; and on many occasions, He used very strong language. For example when the boy came out, and wanted to travel with Him and Jesus said: “Yeah! Come on.” And he said, “Oh! But I have to go back and bury my father.” Do you know that story? What did Jesus say? “Let the dead bury their dead.” So in another words, if you have a chance to study in a real esoteric school, if you have the opportunity, and you don’t take that opportunity, then what’s the use of your life?

So he is clearly advising us to use the discrimination, so that we recognize what is what. But what he is saying here is that just because someone is engaged in sinful activity, or their standard of behavior is not very good, doesn’t mean that we hate them; and doesn’t mean that we pollute our hearts with negative feelings. Sometimes strong words are necessary; that doesn’t mean that we are hating. We are using discipline. That’s a different thing.

So Jesus is saying that however we judge is how we will be judged. There is a well known principle in psychology that whatever you hate, you become that. If a person hates drinking, it is very likely that later in life they will become a drunkard. So really to preserve our full freedom, we shouldn’t hate anything or anyone. Jesus says: “Hate the sin, not the sinner.” So we should be very careful not to engage in activities that are against the principles of purity, because that’s how we pollute our minds, lose our intelligence and fall down into material consciousness.

Also we have to be very careful, especially when we are in the association of the spiritual master, not to do anything against the principles of spiritual life, because he has to take responsibility for that and he actually suffers because of that. So we have to be very careful to maintain a high standard.

Jesus says: “Why do you look at the speck that’s in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye. Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold, the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the spec out of your brother's eye.”

What does this mean? Is he speaking literally? No, it’s a metaphor right? Nobody can have a log in their eye. He is exaggerating to make the point. We may say “Oh! You are doing this and you are doing that,” and find fault, but we don’t see our own faults. So first get rid of our own faults, then we can find other people’s faults. Sometimes as a spiritual teacher, it is necessary for me to find people’s fault, but this is not the same thing; because, I am trying to help them advance. We are not trying to run them off. We are trying to help them become better students, better worshipers of God. So sometimes we will be a little critical, but it’s not the same thing as being a fault finder. The fault finder is like “Uh, your shoe laces are tied wrong; your hat’s on crooked.” They will find some little external thing to criticize to make you feel small. So this is a different thing. This is not done with the intention to help; it is done with the intention to minimize someone. So we have to be careful of fault finding.

Participant: Purified person can help others to get purified, but if we are not purified, we can not help others.

Babaji: That’s why for example, we made some conditions for coming to this retreat. Remember, they are quite detailed. Everybody heard about that? OK. So I know for a fact that some people didn’t do everything that I asked; and the reason I know is because I got sick. So we have to be careful, when there are some rules and regulations, to follow those; there is a reason for those rules. It’s not just whimsical. It’s not just to give everybody a hard time. It’s necessary; otherwise I will suffer, because I am responsible for you when you are on a retreat under my direction. And if you don’t follow the principles, then it makes it harder for me. I can get sick, I could die. It’s very serious.

So first take the log out of your eye. Stop doing the things that pollute your consciousness. Stop doing the things that contaminate your body; because in this atmosphere, any tiny contamination shows up very big. We create a very pure atmosphere, and that’s a very sensitive thing. Everyone has to suffer for the one who breaks the rules. That’s just the way it is. So let's be careful from now on, more careful please.

Jesus says: “Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine; or they will trample them under their feet and turn and tear you to pieces.” So this teaching is not for everyone. This teaching is only for one who wants to get out of this material world. [It is] for one, who is willing to pay the price of becoming completely pure. It’s not for dogs and hogs. Dogs and hogs have very filthy habits. They eat all kinds of contaminated things; and because of that, if you offer them something nice, they will reject it. Actually they will ruin it. They will make offenses and then they will attack you. That’s the nature of dogs and hogs. If you try to give them something nice, they don’t appreciate it.

So we are working very hard to create the best possible teaching, which we received from our spiritual master, and which we want to give to others. We should be careful who we invite. We are canvassing very broadly. Canvassing means to give someone an opportunity. Like in sales, when you cultivate prospects, that’s canvassing. You know that not every one is going to buy what you have to offer; but you make the offer to a lot of different people and let them see if they want it. So we are canvassing very broadly; and we are getting some people who are qualified; so this is very nice; and we are finally starting to get some good kirtans and like that. You notice, the more purified your mind is, the better the kirtan is. So it would be nice if we could live like this all the time.

So the opposite of what Jesus is saying is that when you do find someone who can appreciate what you have, then they receive it with great joy. Remember the story about the jewel? You weren’t there? You were there; ‘The greatest jewel’. I will tell you again. The master gives his disciple an uncut jewel and says: “Take the jewel to the shop in the poor section of the town, in the middle section and in the very rich section of the town and find out the value.” So the disciple says, “Yes, Sir” and he goes to the poor section. He comes in the shop and the guy is dressed very shabby, and the shop is kind of dirty and he shows them the jewel and the guy says “That, that’s not worth anything. Did you steal it or something?” and the disciple goes away. Then he goes to the middle-class section, and he goes to the jeweler there and asks the jeweler "How much is it worth?" The jeweler looks at the stone a little bit and says “Maybe a few pesos, not very much, here you go.” So the disciple then goes to the rich section of the town to the best jeweler in town and he shows the jewel. The jeweler looks at it, takes out his eyepiece and looks and examines it. The he goes into laboratory, scratches it, puts something on it and then gets a big thick book off the shelf and he looks through all the references and makes many tests. Finally he says: “This stone is so valuable, I can’t afford to buy it. Even if I sold everything in my shop, I will, maybe only have half the value of this stone. This is the most valuable stone I think I have ever seen.” Same way, when a person with no knowledge comes in contact with this Teaching, he rejects it. “That’s no good, no value.” The person of average intelligence, average knowledge, and average realization says: “Yeah there is something there, but it is not really very important.” A person who is expert, really intelligent, when they find this Teaching, they will test it, they will look at some reference book, verify that everything is correct and then they accept it as the most valuable thing. Same teaching, same stone, but according to the audience and the preparation, they accept it very differently.

So what Jesus is saying is, “Don’t bother even showing your teaching to people who are so stupid they won’t understand it." Actually Kṛṣṇa says something very similar in Bhagavad-gītā. He says: “Don’t give this teaching to people who are not austere, who are not intelligent or who aren’t pious. Don’t try to disturb them. Let them sleep.” So Kṛṣṇa is saying something very similar. But the devotees are more merciful than even God. They offer their teaching to everybody, and then let them decide. We don’t try to interfere with someone’s free will. We don’t use a lot of sales talk. We just present the truth, and then people either accept it or they don’t.

So the next thing Jesus says is one of the most beautiful things. “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; and he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks it will be opened.”

So what’s He talking about here?

Participant: He is talking about consciousness.

Babaji: Spiritual consciousness. Again, He is not talking on literal level. What is it that we are knocking on? He says, “Knock and it will be opened.” Actually, what he is talking about is God within the heart. God is there but there is a door. We shut that door. That’s why we are here. Now we forgot how to open it; that He knows. So if we knock on that door, He will open it. But we have to knock. We have to ask. We have to desire to receive the knowledge that leads to higher consciousness. So ask, seek. Seek means search, go, look, find. It requires action. It’s not that we just ask, and then we sit there and wait for the God to do everything. No. We have to search. We have to look through the scriptures, we have to look for a qualified teacher, we have to look for an association of people who are really sincere and we have to do the work to purify ourselves.

God will reveal Himself to us, if we purify ourselves. If we don’t do that work to purify ourselves, why should He reveal? He never goes to a place that’s impure. God is always pure, so to receive God, we have to make ourselves pure, so that He will come to us. Otherwise why should He come? Why should He expose Himself to impurity? He is the supreme pure and the supreme purifier. So the chanting, the diet, if we have some problem with the body, we may have to exercise, if we have some disease, we may have to take some medicine, to make ourselves fit for spiritual life.

It almost never happens that a person accepts God at the last moment of life. Only in the movies; makes a nice drama, but it hardly ever happens. Usually what happens is that the way a person spends their whole life, that’s also the way they die. So while we are still young and strong enough to change, we have to use these tools to change; its work, it’s hard. We have to look deep within ourselves. It’s sometimes painful. We have to go back to our childhood and realize why we took certain choices. Why we accepted certain way of life. What are our motivations? What’s deep in our hearts? This is painful; but if we don’t do this, then we can not change or purify ourselves. We can not get rid of the sleep that is keeping us in this material world.

Jesus says here: “What man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If you then being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!”

So the point is, we have to make an effort. But our effort, although is required, is not sufficient. The Lord has to reciprocate our effort. What is our work in spiritual life is simply to make ourselves fit to receive His gift. To make ourselves pure, so that He will come and reveal Himself. He is very shy. He is like a little boy, He is very shy. Why do you think we show Kṛṣṇa as a young boy with a flute? I mean He really is like that. He is not the old man with the beard and with the thunderbolt, you know. “Damn you, Kshh! [hand motion of throwing the weapon]” That’s not God. No, God is a sweet young boy, He likes to play and He just wants to be loved. He doesn’t want to fight and all that, unless it’s a game. So He only comes if we make ourselves pure, if we make ourselves ready for Him. Then He comes, and then He reveals Himself.

He is not going to force us, because He Himself gave us our free will. So He is not going to take away the gift that he already gave. He is not like that. Some people pray, actually I have heard people say this, “God, force me to love you”, “Make me pure”, [in other words] Do all the work. No, He is not like that. He won’t do that. That’s against His principles. His principle is “You approach me by one step; I approach you by one step; you approach ten steps, and I come ten steps." So we have to see that God reciprocates according to how we approach Him. Same thing is in Bhagavad-gita. He says: ye yatha mam prapadyante, it is the most important verse in Bhagavad-gītā, it means, "As they surrender unto me, I reciprocate." [It is] exactly in proportion. So we have to do the work, our work is necessary, but not sufficient. When He reciprocates, that’s when we attain self-realization. So we have to knock, but He has to open the door, and then He will give some very nice gifts. He will give Himself; and that’s what we really want.

So Jesus says: “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” It’s like he is talking to children. You have to tell the children, “Look Johnny, would you like it if he hit you on the head with your toy truck? So then you don’t hit him on the head with the toy truck. Understand?” Yeah, he is talking to children. This is another difference between Jesus and Kṛṣṇa’s teaching in Bhagavad-gītā. He is saying the same thing, but Jesus is talking to very beginners; Kṛṣṇa is talking to Arjuna, who is a very advanced person. So one is giving the kindergarten version, the other one is giving the graduate version. In between there is a huge difference. The difference is in the qualification of the hearer. Arjuna is the most qualified hearer you can find, so he is getting the complete teaching, very high level.

There is another story about a king who had three kinds of horses, and these were the only kind of horses that he would buy. The ordinary soldiers, they had the horses that whenever you pull the reins, then they will go that way; but the generals and the ministers, they had the horses that where you move the body a little bit and the horse automatically goes; then the king and the top men, they had the best kind of horses, where you just think about where you want to go and the horse goes immediately. So according to the qualification of the hearers, some of them you have to whip to get them to do anything. There is a fourth class. We are not interested in those kinds of people. Let the churches and rascal spiritual people have those horses, I mean those students. We want the students that at least when you pull the reins they go. [chuckles] But really we are looking for the first-class students that simply by the hint go. Just like the king had three servants. One servant, he had to beat him to do anything right. After a while he got rid of that servant. The next servant would do anything, but he had to be told to do it. "Do this and this and this, like that and like that and like that." Give him detailed instructions, and then he would do everything. But then the first-class servant would anticipate the king’s wishes, and before the king even thought about it, he will already have it done. And the king was very pleased with this servant.

So when we really come to know the spiritual knowledge, we can anticipate God’s mood. Just like if we have a close friend we know very well, we can understand how they are going to respond to a situation. We can anticipate their mood. We should become that learned, that sensitive. We should know how God is going to respond to different situation, and anticipate and serve Him by initiative instead of waiting to be told. That’s our goal. We want to become like first class servant. That’s how we get to the spiritual world. That was the Golden Rule.

So now Jesus says: “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through that. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

What does he mean by ‘life’? [He means] the eternal life. We have to take everything Jesus says in the context that he is the Master of an esoteric school. He has his 12 close disciples, and then he has a congregation of other people who have personal relationship with him, and there are the masses. Right now he is talking to the masses, so he is not giving the most confidential instruction. He is giving something that everyone can hear. That’s another thing about Bhagavad-gītā. It’s actually spoken in front of the two armies; both the friends and the enemies. So whatever Kṛṣṇa is saying in Bhagavad-gītā is fit for everyone to hear. Of course that was spoken during the Vedic culture, so everyone had a lot of preparation, a lot of background, so He could say some pretty high-level things. But still on the scale of our teachings, Bhagavad-gītā is only the introduction.

The way Jesus is speaking here, this is even preliminary to the introduction. He is just trying to get the people to behave nicely, and not to do really stupid things, and then maybe they become fit to become part of his congregation. Because the way is narrow. Remember we had our glyph with the 3 circles and the triangle. The meaning is that as the triangle goes up it gets narrower and narrower. Finally at the top, only one person can fit. So that gate is very narrow. The gate of initiation is wider; few people can come at one time. And finally the gate of association is wide open. Anybody can come. So anyone can come and associate with an esoteric school, but very few people will actually become initiates. And out of many initiates, maybe one will actually attain full self-realization. It’s a numbers game. It’s just the way it is. We wish that everyone could attain, and someday everyone will. But in any one school, out of so many students, only very few will actually make it all the way. That’s just the way it is.

Another thing that he says is: “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are the ravenous wolves.” I think every one has seen these drawings; the little red riding hood, where the wolf dresses up as the grandmother. “Oh Grandma, what big teeth you have!” So there are many spiritual teachers who are like this. Well, they are only so-called spiritual teachers. Actually they are into money, power, fame, influence. We have all seen people like that. Just last week, we had a student on our online school, he kept talking about how he loves God, and how he wants just the best for everybody, and he wants to share all these wonderful things that he has. He never said anything really of substance. He didn’t say anything to indicate that he had actual spiritual knowledge. It was just all politics. He was trying to get people to listen to him, to hear from him, but he really had nothing to say. And when I pointed this out, he became very upset. False teachers are like that. You can go to churches or go to some yoga groups or meditation groups. They will talk for hours but they won’t say anything. If you ask a question, they become upset. We are the other way around. We welcome questions. We want questions. Otherwise how do we know if you are getting it? The other people, they don’t care if you get it or not. They are just into the theater. ‘Peace and love’ and then stab you at the back. We know so many like that. So we don’t accept this kind of teacher. But it’s not like we are going to go with signs and demonstrate and take it to church or something. You know, why bother? But people should be intelligent enough to be able to tell. And how you tell? Jesus tells us in the next sentence.

You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered by the thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?” So if you see people becoming self-realized, if you see people making advancement in spiritual life, if you see people becoming happy, becoming pure, then you know this is the real Teacher. If you see people sitting in the church gathering dust, spiderwebs, coming week after week, year after year staying just the same, then you know this is not a real school. They are not getting the fruits. Or, if you see someone who says, "Oh! I am also a disciple of Prabhupāda, and I know everything, and you shouldn’t listen to David because he is no good," etc. So "Let's see your students. Are they attaining self-realization? Can they explain confidential subjects in the scriptures?" What is the fruit? Look at the fruit and you will know. So we should be very careful not to associate with groups that don’t give good fruit. Because he says: “Every good tree bears good fruit; but bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.” Yeah, he is talking to kindergartner. This is the basic thing that you have to know. “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down, and thrown into fire.” It’s only good for firewood. So then, "You will know them by their fruits."

Every esoteric school starts from a self-realized Master Teacher, and then the first generation produces good fruits, but after that it starts to degenerate. This is always the way. By second or third generation, nobody is becoming self-realized. They may look very nice, they may have beautiful temples and churches, and they may have lots and lots of followers, lots of money. But these aren’t the fruits that we are looking for. Those are the material things. The fruits we are looking for are spiritual. Who is attaining self-realization? Who is attaining the love of God? Who is chanting and when they hear the name of God, crying and like that. These are the real things that we are after. So we should understand that every school is started by a real Master, and then gradually turns into a church. It may happen quickly, or it may happen slowly, but there is always a need in every generation to start a new school.

My Master left his Teacher’s school and started his own, because they had become useless. Many nice temples, many disciples but nobody is becoming self-realized. Same thing happened in Śrīla Prabhupāda’s school. He made a few disciples who actually got it, but now the second generation has become useless. They are only external followers. They are not really knocking on the door. They just want a convenient life. So anyway, we have to start all over, every generation. It’s just like a farmer, if he puts seeds in the ground and the plants grow, then the first year they are very strong and he gets lots of fruit or vegetables. But then after the next year, if he doesn’t sow it again, the weeds will come and they will choke out the good plants, and he won’t get any fruit, or he will get very little fruits or vegetables. To really get a good crop, he has to plough everything and then plant all over again. It’s the same way in the spiritual teaching. Unless we clear everything out and then start all over, the weeds will come and they will make it impossible to do anything. We won’t get the crop. We won’t get the fruit. So that’s why we are doing. We are starting our own school.

Now he says, “Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven will enter.” In other words, it’s not politics. You can’t just give lip service. You have to actually follow the teachings. Because it’s not up to me if a person attains self-realization, it’s up to God. I can just encourage, I can guide, I can give information and tools and I can demonstrate the right way. But you have to do the work. And He has to give the result. He is the one who determines who actually makes it. Not us. I can like someone, I can think they are great and doing fine, but He may not like that. He is an individual, He has His own will. We have to treat Him like that. So in other words Jesus is saying that if you just flatter your teacher, that’s not going to get you into heaven. “Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord did we not prophesy in your name? And in your name cast out demons? And in your name performed many miracles?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.' ”

So we have also seen this, that people came to our spiritual master, and they offered money, they offered buildings and land and all kinds of things, but they themselves did not follow. They didn’t follow, so he didn’t accept them. He only accepted gifts of lands and things like that from people who followed his teachings. Because what’s the use? Why just flatter the teacher by giving the land and stuff like that? It’s like bribery. “Come on, here is a bunch of money; get me in with the man upstairs. I know you can do that. You got pull with the boss you know, you can get me in.” In India we call it baksheesh, like when you have to bribe the cops. It’s very common in India. “Baksheesh, baksheesh. You want a nice seat on the train, give some baksheesh.” In Spanish it is called merduda, meaning bite. So this may work in material things, but we can’t cheat God. We can’t bribe the teacher. Just like if someone gave me a million dollars, I could spend it tomorrow on the preaching and teaching mission, but it wouldn’t be satisfying unless the person themselves actually was following, then it would be nice. Otherwise it just becomes a source of trouble. I have seen this also. Just like in India, one time, Prabhupāda did accept a big piece of land from someone who wasn’t a disciple, and it just led to so much trouble, endless problems. Still today, the same piece of land is a big problem. There is no use in accepting service from people unless they are actually following. That’s the bottom line that Jesus is saying here.

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who builds his house on a rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.” So what is the rock? Again he is speaking in metaphor right? It is spiritual knowledge, Absolute Truth; because Absolute Truth never changes. Remember, if we say “Oh, today it is nice and sunny,” it might be true now, but then this afternoon it could rain, and then it wouldn’t be true. But if we say, “God is eternal, and His will is always done,” that’s Absolute Truth. Absolute Truth is always true, everywhere and for everyone. I always come back to that. I pound on that again and again, because we have to be able to discriminate between the temporary material truth and the eternal absolute truth. That’s the most important thing that we can learn; that, and the Name of God.

Then he says, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”

One time I was in Arizona, and someone said, “We just bought a nice piece of land where we are going to build our house. Come and see it.” So we went on their land, and it was right on the flood plain next to a big creek. So literally they were going to build on the sand. May be it doesn’t flood every year, but sooner or later it floods, and when it floods it spreads sand everywhere. That’s how you know. Where does sand come from? [It comes] from the friction of the water against the rocks. The water actually grinds the rocks, makes them into little tiny pieces of sand. And then they go down through the stream, and when it floods, it spreads that sand everywhere. So when you find sandy ground, you know that was under water. So that might make a good field, but it’s not a good place to build the house.

So relative truth is compared to sand. Absolute Truth is compared to rock. Building a house is compared to making our personality in our life. If we base our personality in our life on Absolute Truth, then nothing, not even a big storm can push down that house. Even if everything goes crazy in this world, it won’t ruin your life. But, if your whole life is built on the relative truth, materialism, then if anything happens in this world, your life is ruined; because in this material world, periodically there is always some kind of disaster. That’s the way of the material world. Just look at the newspaper every day, something is going on. Even if everything works out in our own life, we still have to face death, and it changes everything. So everything in this world is just temporary. You can’t become attached to it. You can’t build our house on it. You can’t count on it. It’s not security. But the Absolute Truth is eternal. So it is always going to be there. It’s always going to be true. It’s always going to be right.

So “When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at his teachings. For He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” The scribes just repeat the words in the scriptures, like a parrot. They are simply repeating the words, but they don’t really understand the meaning. And you can tell because, the literal-minded people, if you ask them a question that they have never heard before, they can’t answer it. They can’t think through the spiritual subject matter, because they haven’t done the work. They haven’t taken the time to explain everything to themselves, and so if you ask them a new question, they are lost, usually they become angry. They become angry and try to drive you away. They don’t like people who ask questions. But, even if you ask the simplest question like “what is the soul,” most so-called spiritual teachers can’t answer you. If it is not written in the Bible they don’t know. Or, if their entities haven’t channeled it, they don’t know. They can’t answer the simplest question about the spiritual life. What they will do is they will respond with politics. We have seen this again and again. Real spiritual teachers are ready for any question, and they can answer it. It makes sense. That was the wonderful thing about Śrīla Prabhupāda. His knowledge was so complete, he could answer any question and also with wit and style. He was the greatest Master that has appeared in many years.

Participant: He is not living?

Babaji: He left this world in 1978.

Participant: But he left disciples like you.

Babaji: He left many disciples, none like me, I am different. They all want to be in a church and fight over who is going to control it. I don’t want that.

Participant: I thought they were dispersed throughout the world, teaching.

Babaji: Very few are teaching.

Participant: How lucky we are to have you. It is a priviledge.

Babaji: I am lucky to have you because you want to hear. It is very inspiring.
